Classroom Policies
Dear Families,
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I am looking forward to a great year. In second grade you will be preparing for your Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. This is a very important and exciting time in your young lives. This website will be providing information you will need throughout the year. I am not a stagnant teacher, so please come back often to see what may have been changed, added or improved. Together we can make this learning experience a wonderful adventure. I'm excited about working with you and your family!
Classroom Expectations:
Absences: It is very important that all students attend school regularly and arrive on time each day. However, I understand circumstances occur that may require a student to be absent from school. Please send me an e-mail as soon as you know your child will be absent. I also encourage you to use our school breaks for extended travel, as to not disrupt the educational process.
Assessments: In second grade we STAR teat four times a year in Early Literacy, Reading and Math. In addition we have formative and summative assessments in all subject areas as the students complete a unit of study.
Bathroom Breaks: I allow only ONE student at a time to use the restroom during class. A student needing to use the restroom will put our bathroom pass on their desk indicating that they are out of the room.
Birthdays: Birthday invitations may only be passed out at school if every child in the class is invited. You may send a birthday treat for your child to share but please have the date approved prior to sending it. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June. As a summer birthday myself, I feel it is important for all students to be able to celebrate with their classmates.
Classroom Management:
At the end of each day students will record what color they earned on calendars found in their BLUE Home Folders.
Please be sure to SIGN each day on the calendar after talking to your child about their day.
Communication: I am available to meet, by appointment, from 3:30-4:30 Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will respond to email communication in a timely manner, between 7:30am-4:00pm, unless it is an emergency. Please let me know if there are any dramatic changes (death, divorce, etc.) in your child’s life as this may affect his/her performance in school.
Drop-off: This year your child will be building greater independence. To help them grow, parents will not be permitted to follow their child into the classroom in the morning. Please say your good-byes at the door and have a great day! (An exception will be made on the 1st day of school for bringing in classroom supplies for the year.)
FrontRowEd: Please have your child log on to Front Row Ed to practice their independent skills 2-3 times per week.
Home Folder: This BLUE folder will be sent home each night. In it you will find your child's behavior calendar and HW for that night. On Fridays we will send home all your child's graded work.
Homework: Your child will bring home a homework folder with work Monday-Thursday (Wednesday will be Family Homework Night). Assigned homework typically takes 30-45 minutes (including reading time) and provides an opportunity for positive parent-child interaction. Every Monday your child will have a new spelling list to study for a test on Friday. Additional homework will include reading and completing Book Chats, turned in on Fridays. We will also have projects in other subjects from time to time. Home Folders must be returned daily along with the completed homework. BE SURE TO LOOK AT AND SIGN YOUR CHILD’S HOME FOLDER EVERY NIGHT!
Recess/Snacks: I encourage students to bring a healthy snack to eat during recess. WATER is strongly recommended, hydration is a key element to being able to learn.
Sacraments: If you plan to have your child receive their sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion with our class, know that your child will need to already be baptized within the christian faith. If you wish to have your child baptized, please contact Father Modesto no later than November 1, 2016.
Share: Students will have the opportunity yo bring in something, that can fit inside their backpack, to share on Fridays. This gives them weekly practice of their public speaking skills as well as giving us a chance to know them better.

Classroom Expectations:
- LISTEN to others.
- FOLLOW Directions.
- Keep hands, feet, and objects to YOURSELF.
- Work QUIETLY not to disturb others.
- Be RESPECTFUL to others and school property.
- Work and play in a SAFE manner.
- We also embody our School-wide Learning Expectations.

Classroom Management:
- Incentive Program: Students will be handed a ticket when they are "caught being good." This allows me to give them positive feedback without disrupting their concentration with verbal feedback. Students can earn tickets in an infinite amount of ways. Once they receive a ticket, students write their name on it and drop it in the bucket. I will pull tickets from the bucket for a variety of rewards, for example: music selection for 45 second dance party, trip to our prize box, and other fun activities. Students will also earn tickets for each day they remain on "Green" on our behavior chart.
- Discipline: In order to have a positive learning environment for all children we expect everyone to be respectful and follow school and classroom rules. Our primary concern is establishing boundaries and creating a safe and happy atmosphere in which to learn. While I highlight on recognizing expected behavior, there are instances of needed intervention. I use a Red-Yellow-Green System. If a student is not meeting classroom expectations they will receive one verbal warning, any further action will result in moving their clip to the next level. Consequences of each level are as follows:
- Verbal warning
- Lose 5 minutes)
- Move clip to YELLOW
- Think Sheet
- Lose 10 minutes of recess
- Move to Red
- Visit with Mr. Gruttadaro
- Lose 15 minutes of recess
At the end of each day students will record what color they earned on calendars found in their BLUE Home Folders.
